Hotspurs Register Second Win in the Amateur League 1

Victoria Hotspurs F.C. 2 – 0 Qrendi F.C.

Scorers: Ferdinando Apap 41′, Rondinely Roberto Monteiro 81′

In the late Luxol Stadium fixture last Saturday, Victoria Hotspurs secured a morale-boosting victory in their fifth outing of the Amateur League I, defeating Qrendi 2-0 with a goal in each half. The Gozitans learned in the previous four match days that competition is fierce, nothing compared to last season when they ran away with the Amateur League II title.

It was a far from an easy match however for Oliver Spiteri’s side, as the early stages belonged to Qrendi, who immediately threatened towards the Hotspurs’ goal. However, they found goalkeeper Steve Sultana in excellent form, making various interferences. Qrendi enjoyed more possession in the opening minutes, and after eight minutes, a shot by their best performer, Brandon Bray, finished just over the bar. In the 11th minute, another effort from Bray was well saved by Sultana. Ten minutes later, the Hotspurs’ goalkeeper was called into action again, this time blocking a good attempt from Gilmour Azzopardi.

The Hotspurs created their first real chance on the half hour mark when, after a cross from Christian Mercieca, Shaun Attard attempted an acrobatic effort that went off target. In the 38th minute, a dangerous free kick by Bray was once again kept out by the impressive Sultana. Two minutes later, Kurt Borg tried a low shot for the ambitious Gozitans, but Qrendi veteran goalkeeper Christian Cassar saved well. A minute later, Victoria Hotspurs took the lead. From a corner action, captain Ferdinando Apap rose highest and headed past Cassar to make it 1-0, a scoreline that remained until halftime.

In the second half, Qrendi pushed forward in search of an equaliser. On 61 minutes, Joseph Ogunuppe fired a shot from outside the box that finished slightly high. Ten minutes later, a strong effort from Kieran Xuereb forced Sultana into another stretching save. In the 80th minute, Victoria Hotspurs doubled their lead. Brazilian forward Rondinely Monteiro controlled the ball well on his chest and hit a precise shot into the net to make it 2-0. In the 86th minute, substitute Emil Grozdanov went close to scoring a third, but his attempt was well saved by Cassar.

BOV Amateur Cup: Hotspurs Progress to the Semi Finals after Kirkop United Win

Victoria Hotspurs F.C. 3 – 1 Kirkop United F.C.

Scorers: Wagner Eduardo Alves Pereira 20′, Ferdinando Apap 29′, Rondinely Roberto Monteiro 87′

In the first quarter final of the BOV Amateur Cup on Saturday afternoon at the Sirens Stadium, Victoria Hotspurs faced off against Kirkop United in what proved to be an interesting encounter. On paper, the Gozitans were clear favourites but Kirkop have upset a few other teams already this season, including Attard in the second round of this competition.

The team of Oliver Spiteri started strongly and had an excellent shot by Kurt Borg that was tipped over by young Christian Ciantar after just five minutes. But it was Kirkop who took the lead on 11 minutes when James Oghenekewaro finished with aplomb, beating Steve Sultana. Victoria were stunned but reacted strongly and managed to equalize on 20 minutes when Eduardo Wagner managed to conclude after two attempts. Victoria took the lead on 28 minutes when Ferdinando Apap headed beautifully home leaving Ciantar rooted.

The Hotspurs came close again on 65 minutes with a shot by Wagner that grazed the post. On 81 minutes another chance went begging for Victoria when substitute Christian Mercieca was in the clear, but his finish was a weak one. The Gozitans made sure of the win three minutes from time when Rondinely concluded with an excellent low shot to send Victoria into the Amateur Cup semi-finals and the Preliminary Round of the Meridianbet FA Trophy.

Line Up: Andre Micallef (Gk), Jake Farrugia (Phoenix Muscat), Adam Galea, Karl Attard (Dorian Cutajar), Emil Grozdanov (c), Andrew Grima, Kyle Lupi Spencer, Chylen Fava, Claude Buttigieg, Ian Zarb, Kurt Bajada (Eric Vella).

Victoria Hotspurs secured a comfortable 4-1 win against Msida St Joseph FC to put an end to the Saints’ unbeaten start to the campaign.

Victoria, who have been very impressive over the past few weeks, were in fine attacking form from the very first whistle. 27 minutes into the encounter, Adam Galea freed himself from his markers, before firing a shot past goalkeeper Jake Tabone to give the Hotspurs the lead.

Just a few minutes later, Emil Grozdanov found space, before slotting home another goal for Victoria, doubling their advantage. Msida looked for a way back into the match, but Victoria were proving too strong, not allowing Msida any room.

In the second half, the Hotspurs continued to control the match, and they added more goals to the scoreline. First it was Kurt Bajada in the 50th minute, and then in the 62nd through Chylen Fava, giving them a comfortable cushion going into the final few minutes.

The Hotspurs took their foot off the pedal in the final few minutes, looking to preserve their four-goal lead. However, Msida did manage to get a goal back in the 83rd minute, as Nicky Attard Portugese found the back of the net, but it proved to be just a consolation, with the Hotspurs getting the win.

Victoria Hotspurs Advance to Next Round in the Amateur Cup After Penalty Shoot-Out

Victoria Hotspurs F.C. 4 – 4 (5 – 4 Pens) Qrendi F.C.

Scorers: 107′ Rondinely Roberto Monteiro, 42′ Kurt Borg, 51′ Christian Mercieca, 75′ Emmanuel Mbong

On Saturday, Victoria Hotspurs secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Qrendi FC 5-4 on penalties in a thrilling encounter. It was far from an easy match for the Hotspurs, who found themselves 2-0 down early in the game but managed to turn the score around in their favour. Qrendi equalised late on, forcing the match into extra time. In the additional 30 minutes, the Gozitans regained the lead, only for Qrendi to score a stoppage-time equaliser that sent the game to a penalty shootout.

Qrendi started well and took the lead in the 11th minute when Brandon Bray broke through the defence and fired a low shot past Kyle Barbara in the Victoria goal. The Hotspurs appeared shaken and in the 36th minute, Joseph Ogunnupe doubled Qrendi’s advantage after capitalising on a defensive error and slotting the ball home beyond Barbara’s reach. The Gozitans pulled one back three minutes before half-time when Kurt Borg connected well with a pass from Ferdinando Apap and finished clinically to make it 2-1 at the break.

In the second half, the Hotspurs came out much stronger and equalised through Christian Mercieca, who combined neatly with Wagner before beating goalkeeper Krassimir Zammit, just six minutes after the break. The team of coach Kevin Ellul quickly restored their lead on 64 minutes when Ogunnupe converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2. Emmanuel Mbong, just five minutes after coming on as a substitute, struck a powerful shot into the roof of the net to level the score at 3-3, sending the match into extra time.

During extra time, the Hotspurs showed great determination and took the lead for the first time in the 107th minute through lanky Brazilian forward Rondinely. But just when it seemed the Hotspurs were heading for victory, Qrendi launched a quick counterattack in stoppage time, with speedster Gianfranco Micallef catching the defence off guard and scoring from close range to make it 4-4. The Hotspurs were flawless in the penalty shootout, converting all their kicks, while Qrendi missed once, sealing the victory in a dramatic afternoon at the Luxol Stadium.
