Victoria Hotspurs also started the year 2025 in style by beating rock bottom outfit Santa Venera Lightnings 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Luxol Stadium. It was, on paper, Victoria’s tenth victory from ten league matches, as earlier last week the news came through that the Hotspurs’ protest against the illegibility of a St George’s player was upheld, being awarded a 3-0 victory over the Blues, chalking out the 2-0 victory of the Pioneers over the league leaders.

As expected, the Hotspurs had no particular difficulty against the Saints, keeping in mind that the Lightnings stretched the Gozitans to the limit with a 2-1 win in the 1st round. After a period of relative equality, Santa Venera even had a fine opportunity when Italo Henrique saw his effort end up just wide from a good position in what could have meant a shock lead. However, it was Victoria Hotspurs who resumed normal service on 19 minutes when they were awarded a penalty which was cooly converted by returning Brazilian striker Rondinely.

The goals came thick and fast after that with strikes by Dylan Mercieca, Rondinely grabbing his brace on 21 minutes and four minutes later, Mercieca also scoring his second of the afternoon. Victoria’s fifth came just before the half hour courtesy of Daniel Farrugia as the match threatened to turn into a rout.

The Hotspurs clearly put their foot off the gas in the second half with a flurry of substitutions and added a sixth on 71 minutes when substitute Jason Pace scored directly from a corner. The Gozitans simply controlled the game for another emphatic victory, also finding time to add a seventh a minute from time through Valentim de Sousa.
