Hotspurs Suffer First Defeat in the IZIBET Amateur League II
Victoria Hotspurs 0 – 2 St George’s

St George’s FC produced the result of the week, ending Victoria Hotspurs FC’s perfect record and 26-game run to an end after beating them 2-0 in a pulsating encounter at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

Prior to the match, Victoria Hotspurs were looking for another win to add to their 100% record in the division, having completely dominated the division so far. On their part, St George’s, under the guidance of coach Edmond Lufi were looking to gain something out of this encounter although it seemed a tall order.

As expected, the Hotspurs started on the front foot and could have gone ahead on 13 minutes when a shot by Kurt Borg ended up hitting the side netting. Victoria again came close to taking the lead on 35 minutes when a header by Dejan Bogdanovic from a corner ended up being cleared off the line by a St George’s defender.
St George’s had their first chance of the match on 39 minutes when Julian Iwueke was in the clear from a counter, but his shot was easily saved by Adrian Parnis.
Victoria fluffed another great chance at the start of the second half when Christian Grima shot well over the bar on 50 minutes.
However, St George’s were the ones who took the lead on 62 minutes. A brilliant individual move by Iwueke saw him break the offside trap, leaving the strike free to round goalkeeper Parnis before finishing the ball into the net.

The scoreline was quickly doubled in the 76th minute after another classic counterattack, with Owen Galea cooly depositing the ball into the net to the jubilation of the Cospicua supporters. Following the goal, St George’s controlled the rest of the match easily, with the Hotspurs’ impressive run coming to a close.
