First Half Goals Enough for Hotspurs
Victoria Hotspurs 6 – 0 Ta’ Xbiex Sports Club
Scorers: 14′, 31′, 40′, 66′ Kurt Borg, 24′ Ferdinando Apap, 34′ Emmanuel Mbong
On Saturday afternoon at the Sirens Stadium, Victoria Hotspurs collected their sixth league victory of the season, extending their magnificent run to 22 consecutive wins all competitions this calendar year. Ta’ Xbiex, deploying a cautious game-plan, proved to be no-match for the Gozitans in this one-sided game, with Kurt Borg scoring four goals for his new team in his first start of the season.
On 14 minutes, the Hotspurs broke the deadlock through Borg, punishing some hesitant defending in the Blacks defence. Ten minutes later, Ferdinando Apap doubled with a great volley from a Christian Grima cross, while Grima also provided the cross to the third goal, with Borg tapping home from close-range just after the half hour mark. On 34 minutes, Emmanuel Mbong curled a free-kick in the bottom left corner to sign for the fourth goal of the afternoon and on 40 minutes, Victoria were awarded a penalty after a hands ball incident in the box, which Borg duly converted.
Nine minutes after the re-start, a Dejan Bogdanovic free-kick hit the crossbar with nobody on-hand to burry the ball home in the rebound. Four minutes later, Wellington missed a sitter from close-range, nearly capitalising on a rare error by Ta’ Xbiex goalkeeper Matthew Schembri. On 67 minutes, Borg rounded-off some excellent work by Wellington to score his side’s sixth. On 82 minutes, Wellington’s attempt from the edge of the box hit the woodwork. With Kalkara being defeated by Mqabba, Victoria Hotspurs have now opened a six-point gap on their nearest competitors.
